The development come in the wake of growing concerns over increased numbbers of people who are travelling outside the country the seek medical treatment in cardiac diseases, renal and other complicated ailments.
Speaking on the sidelines of a tour of the Parkview Hospital a subsidiary of PSMI, health and child Care minister, Dr David Parirenyatwa applauded PSMI for putting in place a state of the art medical service centre at a time when Zimbabwe was losing a lot of revenue as thousands of people fly out of the country for medical attention.
“What is happening here is that we are looking in this country to see how we can continue to increase the space for medical treatment and medical care and we are looking at every space possible and Parkview hospital is one hospital that has been providing care and i thought we should come and see exactly what is happening here to see how it ties with the national vision and healthcare.
“I am impressed that they have the largest renal unit in the country and you find that they have got a lot of diagnostics on the ground floor. we hope they now begin to look at specialization so that some of the medicals services we seek outside the country can be offered here so that we don’t keep on exporting people who go outside to seek medical treatment,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.
He added that Zimbabwe had some experts to handle such cases which most people fly out to seek and the move by PSMI to offer specialised services could go a long way in improving the health service delivery system for the country.
Cardiac catheterization (kath-uh-tur-ih-ZAY-shun) is a procedure used to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. During cardiac catheterization, a long thin tube called a catheter is inserted in an artery or vein in your groin, neck or arm and threaded through your blood vessels to your heart.
Parkview Hospital Renal Unit is equipped with 20-state-of-art Gambro dialysis machines and recliner dialysis couches for patient comfort. The centre is dedicated to renal care. We offer a wide range of consultative, diagnostic, therapeutic and haemodialysis services.
PSMI boss, Dr Farai Muchena said they were expecting funding from the Trade Development Bank to ensure they commence offering more specialized services as well as import equipment.
“We are currently focusing on specialization and we are looking at at doing cardiac catheterization here, we are looking at doing open heart, we are looking at doing major orthopedic particularly the hip surgery which is currently being done outside. Even Cardiac catheterization is also currently being offered outside so those are the two areas of specialization that we are looking at.
“We are hoping that we should be getting fund disbursement in the near future we have approached Trade and Development Bank, they were here to do due diligence and hopefully they will be responding anytime this week. In term of time lines these two areas of specificity that is catheterization and orthopedic will be actually operating,” said Dr Muchena.
He however bemoaned the lack of foreign currency as major set back to their operation as they have to import most of the state of the art equipment from foreign countries.
