CO-FOUNDER of DMK South Africa, Najma Khan has advised pregnant women against using skin bleaching and whitening creams during pregnancy as have a toxic effect on the baby which lead to harm or even worse for the unborn child.
Speaking on SABC news over the weekend, Khan said skin bleaching creams were made of highly poisonous substances such as Mercury among other toxins which are used in high dosages.
“You are looking at Hydroquinone which is very commonly used in low doses in the industries. But with the skin bleaching creams, unfortunately you are looking at anything from 7 percent to 12 percent.
“So what this ingredient does is that it lightens the skin, and then darkens it very quickly causing a condition called Ochronosis which then is very difficult to treat. We also have mercury now we all know mercury is poison and is also systemic, so it goes through the skin into the blood system, it affects your nervous system and it has a negative effect on your kidneys. Can you imagine a pregnant women using skin bleaching products, its definitely going to affect the baby,” said Khan.
