According to a survey done by HealthTimes, as early as 8:00 am, blood donors had already come through to give blood at Joina City branch and the NBSZ Mazowe branch in Harare.

In an interview on the side-lines of the Blood drive, NBSZ Public Affairs Manager, Ms Esther Massundah said the Valentines blood drive was one of the many campaigns lined up for this year to ensure the blood bank meets its 2019 blood collection target.

“We had a good response at our Harare branch clinic which is situated along Mazowe. This if very encouraging because we usually  get a very huge  flock  around lunch time but this time people took time during working hours to come through and give blood.

“We are really encouraging people to come through and make a difference. We are hearing people talking about love and we encouraging them to show how to love through giving blood to that person who is in great need. This year we have got a target of 108 405 units of blood which is up from the 2018 target which was 87 000 because blood is now free. 87 000 was our target for 2018 and for this year its 108 405 units and this is a lot of blood,” said Ms Massunda.

She added that initiatives such as the Valentine blood drive was key in capturing the adult population in line with their drive to grow the adult blood donor base  from 65 percent to 70 percent  in terms of  repeat donors.

“We are also trying to grow our figure for new donors from 2 percent to 5 percent in 2019. It is however very early for us to say that we have already achieved our target for 2019 since it is still the beginning of the year.

“We actually need to replenish the stocks. Schools have just opened and most new lower sixth students are yet to commence studies so we are now just relying on O Level and Upper six students.”

Meanwhile, Fanuel Mungofa a blood donor said the best gift one can ever give on Valentines was the gift of blood.

“I come here after every 10 months to give blood. I have been giving for a long time now and I would say I have lost track as to when exactly I started but I have lost count now.

“I encourage everyone out there to come and give blood in their numbers and save lives.”

Carol Livingstone says she is giving blood for the 52nd time and it is probably the best feeling she has ever had.

“In an economic situation like ours, where money and other gifts are hard to come by, the gift of blood could be the best gift once could ever give,” said Carol.
