WIZEAR Trust last week handed over a Pediatric Eear, Nose and Throat (ENT) theatre project to Sally Mugabe Hospital, formally known as Harare Hospital in a move that set to address unnecessary delays and inconveniences to patients requiring ENT surgery.
The setting up of the unit comes after countless meetings and discussions which started from as back as 2017 between WizEar and Hospital authorities.
In his welcome speech Dr Christopher Pasi said, “The journey has not been easy. At some point the hospital (SMCH) changed CEOs and each one came with his own expectations tPhus resulting in three different spaces being identified for the project. However the finalised one which is between the ENT Audiology and Speech Therapy Unit and the hospital Administration is the idea space as it links together the ENT unit and the other theatres currently existing.
Today marks a great day in the ENT Paediatric Theatre which comes as a recommendations from ned evaluations that were done in 2018. This theatre will provide surgical services not only for ENT related cases but to other surgery needing cases at the hospital. This will help in alleviating long waiting lists for patients. The current theaters at the hospitals are overwhelmed and this has resulted in avoidable deaths of clients on waiting lists. Having the theatre will reduce the burden of having long waiting list. This theatre and Audiology Unit will also serve as a training school for ENT registrars.”
According to Dr.Pasi over 1500children were attended to in the ENT unit last year and this number would have been double had it not been for Covid-19 movement restrictions. The SMCH serves as a referral hospital for low to medium income families in Zimbabwe.
