According to an update on the Admissions and Community Deaths by Vaccination Status that was released by the Chief COVID-19 Coordinator in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Agnes Mahomva, 88.9% of those who have lost their lives to COVID in Harare were unvaccinated.
This data was gathered from 207 total number of deaths and mortuary data. The findings also indicated that 3.4% of those who died had received only the first dose while 4.8% had received both doses while 2.9% is still unknown.
Over 90% of recorded COVD-19 admissions are not vaccinated. The Zimbabwe COVID-19 third wave continues to unfold. Mortality rate is higher than the first and second waves. More children are getting infected compared to previous waves.
“Most COVID-19 admissions are of unvaccinated people. Most COVID-19 community deaths are unvaccinated people. Vaccination is contributing to protection of people from COVID-19 hospitalisation and deaths. Its saving lives,” said Dr Mahomva.
She added that vaccination must be accelerated as an additional prevention measure to compliment all other prevention measures. She also said there is need to procure more vaccines to maintain the momentum.
Meanwhile, a cumulative total of 1 352 514 citizens have received the first dose of the vaccine while 664 587 have received the second jab.
