Human-Wildlife Conflict In Zim: Six People Killed By Wild Animals In One Week

A 46 year old man from Save was killed by an Elephant whilst coming from church, bringing the total number of people who have been killed by wildlife over the past seven days t0 six.

According to Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife (ZIMPARKS) spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo, conflict between people and wildlife was becoming a big conservation threat for Zimbabwe.

A 46 year old man from Save was unfortunately killed by an elephant whilst coming from church with other congregants. Other congregant manged to escape from the raging bull. They were traveling in a scotch cart. This week alone, at least six people were killed by wild animals in separate incidences across the the country. Four were killed by elephants and two by crocodiles,” said Mr Farawo.

By July, 2021, at least 10 people had been killed by elephants in Mbire alone this while deaths and injuries in the Kariba area from elephant and buffalo attacks and destruction of crops near wildlife areas were also recorded.

In 2020, 60 people were killed by wildlife while 50 others were injured, some permanently, indicating a 58% increase in cases from 38 people who were killed in 2019.
