The appropriately furnished unit was last week converted into a COVID-19 isolation centre, something which left Brave Little Hearts which worked hard to see the unit set up, concerned.

Brave Little Hearts in Zimbabwe (BLHZ is a community organisation in Bulawayo advocating for the interests of children with congenital heart diseases. The organisation seeks to spread awareness and knowledge to the public concerning the heart disease which has claimed a number children living with congenital heart disease (CHD).

The children who come to the Pediatric cardiac ward at Mpilo, Ms Tendai Moyo said, are sent to another ward in the First floor with dilapidated beds.

I am not happy the unit that we tirelessly worked on as parents and community for our children living with heart disease has been turned into a covid isolation centre for non covid children while our children are admitted in non conjucive environment our efforts are being sabotaged its as though the lives of these children are less important than every other child. Yet the hospital has many other rooms to use for isolating. As parents we are greatly pained at such a move,” she said.

She added, “Our kids being moved to use these falling apart beds That’s the standard of our bed compared to what our cardiac kids are being made to use.”

She said efforts to engage Hospital authorities over the issue have been fruitless as they have are being told to email and wait for responses next week. Efforts to reach Mpilo Acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya were futile for he was not picking up calls.  In September last year BLHZ officially established a cardiac ward at Mpilo.
