Zim’s Traffic Accidents Related Deaths Decline

The number of deaths due to road traffic accidents declined by 4.5 percent from 553 in 3rd quarter 2022 to 528 in the 4th quarter despite a 4.3 percent increase in the total number of road traffic accidents from 13,246 accidents reported in 3rd quarter 2022 to 13,815 during 4th quarter 2022.

Presenting findings from Transport Statistics Report 2018-2022, Zimbabwe National Stastics Agency (Zimstat) Director General, Mr Taguma Mahonde said, “…the year-on-year comparison of total road traffic accidents reported shows a 16.1% increase from 45,307 in 2021 to 52,585 in 2022.”

In 2018, the number of traffic accidents was 58,739 and that of deaths was 1,918 and those injured were 12,487. In 2019 45,928 road traffic accidents were recorded, indicating a -21.8 percent decline from accidents recorded in 2018, Deaths were 1,495 and injuries were 8,904 under the same period.

35,560 traffic accidents were recorded in 2020, reflecting a -22.6% decline from the previous year. Deaths were 1,520 while 6,920 injuries were also recorded during the same year. In 2021, 45,307 were recorded showing 27.4% increase. 1,885 deaths and 8,669 were recorded under the same period. 52,585 accidents were recorded in 2022 showing a 16.1 percentage change, 2,079  deaths and 10,611.
