Cholera Spreads To 17 Traditional Hotspots In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is experience another Cholera wave amidst indications of a surge in new cases in rural communities and traditional Cholera hostposts.

To date, 4 730 suspected cases of Cholera have been recorded countrywide, with 944 having been confirmed. 30 Confirmed deaths and 100 suspected deaths have so far been recorded since the outbreak was reported in Chegutu early this year.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) daily Cholera Situation Report, 34 new suspected cholera cases, (0) suspected deaths and (5) laboratory confirmed results were reported on October 8, 2023.  The cases were reported from Buhera (22), Mutare City (8) Mutare Rural (2) and Harare (2).

41 districts have reported cases so far in the country.  As of 08 October 2023, 77 cases are hospitalized at Bikita CTC (9), Zaka (3) in Masvingo Province, Buhera (34), Chipinge (14), MutareCity (4) Mutare Rural (5) in Manicaland Province, Zvimba (1), Mhondoro-Ngezi (1) Mash West Province and BRIDH (5) in Harare Province and Thorngrove (1) in Bulawayo Province.

The outbreak has now spread to more than the 17 traditional cholera hotspot districts of Buhera, Chegutu, Chikomba, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Chiredzi, Harare, Gokwe North, Marondera, Mazowe, Shamva, Mutare, Murehwa, Mwenezi, Seke and Wedza,” said the Ministry of Health.

The first cholera outbreak in the country in 2023 started on the 12th of February 2023 in Chegutu town, Mashonaland West Province.

To date suspected and confirmed cases have been reported in 41 districts in ALL the 10 provinces of the country since the beginning of 2023
