The new nursing training recruitment policy among other issues address the issue of recruitment modalities following the abandonment of e-recuitment, HealthTimes has learned.

Zimbabwe abandoned the centralized online application system for nurses after the online approach had drawn harsh criticism from the public for preventing eligible local candidates from being hired by training institutes in their areas.

The decision to change the procedure was made in response to an investigation that exposed a troubling pattern: a disproportionate number of trainee nurses were being hired from places that were far from nearby hospitals.

Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Dr Aspect Maunganidze told this publication the policy will be unveiled after the May 2024 recruitment.

“This intake has no e-recruitment. We will have an all-stakeholder meeting to come up with a new recruitment policy for nurse training after the May intake,” he said. “We will finalise on the date and place after the May recruitment.”

The awaited recruitment policy, according to Dr Maunganidze will be updated it to reflect the current conditions with regard to job qualifications and necessary requirements for recruitment.

“It is a default position we have taken because we are still going to do an all stakeholders meeting to look at how the recruitment policy for nursing can be revamped to speak to the current settings in terms of job qualifications and all the necessary requirements for recruitment.

“We anticipate that between now and September we would have done the needful, and if necessary that SI will be changed.
“You might also be aware that even in our tertiary institutions, adverts will just specify that the following subjects, but the actual issues like grading and other advantages will be looked at during the shortlisting process,” Dr Maunganidze was quoted as saying.
