The Women Democracy Network (WDN) following 10 days of activism against gender based violence has extended this to 365 days taking the campaign online and via media.
The organization also champions the rights of women not only in GBV but in gender-responsive policy making. The campaign, titled “365 Days of Action for Gender Equality,” aims to raise awareness and stimulus conversations about the harmful effects of gender-based social norms and promote policy changes that address gender inequalities.
“The campaign, which ran from 17 June to 26 June 2024, aimed to raise awareness and spark conversations about GBV, importance of gender-responsive policymaking and the need to address harmful gender social norms that hinder women’s participation in public life. Gender champions’ voices and advocacy messages were amplified and shared a series of social media posts, online discussions,” said WDN in a statement.
WDN held an intercontinental dialogue where it was highlighted that males are as much victims of GBV.
“We also saw youths and school going children contributing their articles on collective efforts on the need to address harmful gender social norms that hinder girls and women’s participation in public life. It was also highlighted on the need for essential to acknowledge and address the issue that men and boys also face GBV, Men also suffer from gender-based violence but are afraid to speak out because of criticism and labeling,”added the organization.
WDN-Zimbabwe Board Chair Sapi Bachi said, “We are grateful for the support of our partners and allies who joined us in this campaign.
“Together, we can create a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential,” she said. “Harmful social norms perpetuate gender-based violence, limit women’s economic empowerment and restrict their autonomy and decision-making.”
She added the campaign seeks gender responsive policy making.
“Through this campaign, we aim to challenge these norms and advocate for gender-responsive policy making that promotes gender equality and empowers women and girls.
“The campaign will feature daily social media posts, weekly themes, and monthly online activities, including gender responsive Policy advocacy, duty bearers engagements dialogues and Storytelling.
“We believe that gender equality is a fundamental human right, and we urge everyone to join us in this campaign to challenge harmful social norms and advocate for gender-responsive policy making,” Bachi said.
