New IAS President Welcomes Decision To Rotate International AIDS Conference

Newly elected International AIDS Society (IAS) president, Beatriz Grinsztejn says the decision to rotate hosting of the International AIDS Conference.

This comes amid indications that Rwanda will be hosting the 2025 edition the annual International AIDS Conference.

The move is set to reduce incidences of Visa related challenges experienced by attendees mainly from Africa and other third world countries.

Announcing the development, newly elected IAS president,  Beatriz Grinsztejn said the rotational policy was a step in the right direction.

Following the many denied visas at AIDS 2022 in Montreal, we implemented a rotation policy to ensure that IAS conferences go to every region of the world.”  said Grinsztejn

Under the new arrangement, the IAS conferences will rotate among five world regions. Germany  hosted AIDS Conference 2024 and in 2025, the IAS  will be in Africa. For AIDS 2026, the organization will seek bids from cities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, IAS welcomed the new president and Kenneth Ngure from Kenya as President-Elect. The IAS leadership also expressed deep gratitude to Sharon Lewin from Australia who stepped down as IAS President and assumed her role as Immediate Past President.

Grinsztejn, is a leading infectious disease physician-researcher, co-founder of FIOCRUZ HIV/AIDS Service, the largest care provider in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has served as Director of the HIV/AIDS Clinical Research Unit at the Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectious Diseases – FIOCRUZ for 25 years.

Grinsztejn is also a leader in clinical research for the development of new HIV prevention tools, including an important study to evaluate long-acting injectable cabotegravir in HIV-negative men who have sex with men and trans women (HPTN 083). A pioneering champion of LGBTQIA+ rights, she also led efforts to introduce gender-affirming care in Brazil.

The IAS also announced newly elected members of its Governing Council, which determines strategy and policy direction for the organization to ensure that it fulfils its mission.
