The China-Zimbabwe Medical Exchange Program marks four decades, with the 21st China Medical Team honored for its contributions to medical treatment and training in the country. Over 14,000 Zimbabweans received medical care from this team, while 1,000 healthcare workers underwent training.
Speaking at a reception ceremony for the incoming 22nd China Medical Team, Health and Child Care Deputy Minister Hon. Sleiman Kwidini praised the outgoing 21st team for its efforts in strengthening Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
Often working in the most remote and underserved areas, the 21st China Medical Team has treated over 14,000 patients, trained more than 1,000 local healthcare workers, and established critical healthcare facilities such as the telemedicine center, the first aid training center, and the clinical skills training center at Parirenyatwa Hospital since their arrival last March.
“These efforts have not only saved lives but have also enhanced the capacity of our healthcare system, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. The impact of the China Medical Team extends far beyond numbers.
“It is reflected in the smiles of patients whose sight has been restored through the Bright Journey program, in the lives saved through skilled emergency care, and in the invaluable knowledge shared with our local doctors and nurses. These teams have embodied the philosophy of perseverance, dedication, life-saving commitment, and great compassion—a philosophy that has guided their work and earned them the respect and admiration of the Zimbabwean people,”* he said.
He also commended the broader collaboration between the two countries, saying, “The partnership between Zimbabwe and China in the healthcare sector is a shining example of what can be achieved when nations collaborate with mutual respect and friendship.”
The Chinese Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Cheng Yan, announced that as part of the exchange program, 60 Zimbabwean medical professionals would receive training in China this year.
“Our two countries also have close exchanges in medical personnel training. This year, we will invite over 60 Zimbabwean hospital staff and medical officials to visit China,” he said.
Welcoming the 22nd China Medical Team, which recently arrived in Zimbabwe, Cheng encouraged the team to build on the progress of their predecessors.
*”On this occasion, we also extend a warm welcome to the 22nd China Medical Team, who just arrived this week. I want to encourage you: remember, you are not only here to treat patients but also to exchange skills and expertise with your Zimbabwean colleagues.
“You are not only medical professionals but also envoys of China-Zimbabwe friendship. I look forward to your contributions to the Zimbabwean people and our bilateral relations, building on the solid foundation cemented by your predecessors.”*
Dr. Tan, captain of the 21st China Medical Team, highlighted the impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Zimbabwe, noting that over 15,000 patients have received treatment since 2023.
*”The Traditional Chinese Medicine Center has been a landmark at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where Dr. Hu Sha has provided free acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine treatment for two years.
“From January 2023 to March 2025, she, along with her colleagues, has treated 15,088 patients, established the TCM Exhibition Room and the TCM First Aid Cabin, and launched a specialized cerebral palsy clinic every Thursday, offering children access to traditional Chinese acupuncture and rehabilitation therapy,”* he said.
Beyond hospital settings, the outgoing team also provided free medical services while raising awareness about the prevention and control of infectious diseases such as malaria, cholera, and monkeypox. They also conducted emergency response training for healthcare workers.
The 22nd China Medical Team, which arrived on Sunday, comprises ten specialists in fields such as radiation medicine, respiratory medicine, and pediatrics.
Dr. Zheng Xingyou, captain of the incoming team, expressed commitment to continuing the work of their predecessors.
“As we embark on this mission, we are inspired by the commendable achievements of the 21st China Medical Team in Zimbabwe. Their success serves as a shining example for us to follow.
