The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reassured staff and the public that measures are being taken to address key concerns raised by nurses at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital following their demonstration on March 17, 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry acknowledged the challenges at the hospital, particularly issues related to water supply, elevator functionality, staff welfare, and medical supplies. Efforts are already underway to resolve these problems and improve service delivery at the facility.

One of the main concerns raised by hospital staff was the erratic water supply, which has impacted hospital operations. The Ministry revealed that repairs to the hospital’s 2.5-mega-litre water tank are being prioritized to enhance reservoir capacity. Additionally, the Ministry is engaging the Harare City Council to secure a more consistent water supply.

Speaking on the developments, Dr. Donald Mujiri, the Ministry of Health and Child Care spokesperson, stated,
“We acknowledge the concerns raised by the nursing staff, and the Ministry is working tirelessly to ensure solutions are implemented swiftly. Water supply is a critical issue, and we are expediting the repair of the hospital’s tank to guarantee a steady supply. Additionally, our engagement with the city authorities will ensure long-term sustainability.”

The Ministry also addressed concerns regarding the hospital’s aging elevator system, stating that three elevators are currently under repair, with at least one expected to be operational within the next few days. Efforts are also in progress to repair the maternity and kitchen elevators, which have been a source of concern for both patients and hospital staff.

To enhance staff welfare, a second bus has been allocated to the hospital to facilitate transportation for healthcare workers. Additionally, plans are in place to improve staff accommodation and cafeteria services in line with government policies.

On the issue of medical supplies, Dr. Mujiri emphasized that the Ministry is actively working to address shortages, ensuring that the hospital is well-equipped to provide quality healthcare services.
“Our commitment to patient care remains unwavering. We are working closely with key stakeholders to address these challenges and maintain the highest standards of healthcare at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital,” he said.

The Ministry reiterated its dedication to creating a supportive environment for both patients and healthcare workers, emphasizing that the government is committed to addressing concerns raised by medical professionals and ensuring the smooth operation of public hospitals.
