GOVERNMENT has announced plans for a widespread vaccination exercise in the country’s tourism capital, Victoria Falls in a move that is set to ensure a safe tourist destination.
Victoria Falls has a population of 109,660 and is currently the country’s biggest tourism hub. Dr John Mangwiro, the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care who was on a tour of health facilities in Victoria falls disclosed government’s plan that a total of 70 000 doses were set aside for the exercise to be launched on Wednesday.
The vaccination exercise is significant and will make Victoria Falls the first city in the country to get such an intervention. We want tourists to become confident that it is safe to come back to Victoria Falls. We had to take a decision knowing the significance of this town which happens to be the tourist capital and Zimbabwe’s newest city,” Dr Mangwiro said.
Dr Maxwell Hove, the Chief Director Curative Services in the Ministry of Health and Child Care stressed that the vaccines are already in Bulawayo waiting for the centres that are being around the resort city.
“The doses are already in Bulawayo after having been transported from Harare. As soon as storage issues are finalized, we will collect the vaccines and they will be dispatched to this boarder town,” Dr Hove said.
