In a world where social and economic barriers often limit access to healthcare and opportunities, Population Solutions for Health (PSH) an organization is using sports to break down these barriers and promote health and inclusion.
PSH is on a mission to empower marginalized communities and individuals, providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive.
As PSH continues to champion health, inclusion, and empowerment, the organization’s recent sports tournament at Chemhanza grounds in Glenview, highlighted the impact of inspirational role models like Eddie Mashiri. A former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Warriors legend, who played football at this pitch motivated others to join the PSH movement and strive for a brighter, healthier future.
The sports tournament was held under the: “Strength is in You Campaign.”
With support from the Swedish Embassy, Population Solutions, through the Strength is in You campaign, partnered with Harare City Social Services and ZiCHIRe-BC to host a vibrant soccer tournament. The event brought together five teams from Mabvuku, Tafara, Glen View, Budiriro, and Mufakose, showcasing the unifying power of sports in addressing social challenges.
More than just a soccer tournament, the event provided a platform for drug and substance use prevention education, first-line counseling, sexual and reproductive health information, and support on gender-based violence. By combining physical activity with awareness and support services, the initiative empowered young participants and their communities to embrace resilience and healthier lifestyle choices.
In an interview with this publication, PSH Marketing Manager, Nigel Kunaka added that his organization’s work is a shining example of the impact that can be achieved when sports, health, and inclusion come together.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or abilities and our mission is to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable society for all,” Kunaka explained. Kunaka added that the Strength is in You anti- Drug Campaign is a national public campaign which is being implemented by Population Solutions for health.
“Our goal is to inspire positive change among young people by leveraging the power of sports and other channels. We are addressing the pressing issues of drug abuse, mental health, and sexual reproductive health to create healthier, more resilient communities. By empowering youths, we are building a stronger, brighter future for generations to come”, said Kunaka.
Speaking on the same event, Zimbabwe Community Health Intervention Research Behavioral Change Programme (ZICHIRE-BC) programme officer for Harare West South West, Ngoni Mudoti emphasized the importance of addressing drug and substance abuse among youths, saying, ”Our campaign aims to educate and empower young people in this community to make informed choices about their health and well-being,” he said.
Mudoti said the Brother 2 Brother initiatives are centered around creating a network of supportive relationships among young men, providing them with access to mentorship, guidance, and encouragement as they work to overcome life’s challenges.
“We are dedicated to empowering our beneficiaries with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain their health and well-being. Through SRH sessions, counseling, and mentoring, we promote awareness about the importance of accessing vital services. We also collaborate with PSH to provide referrals for HIV testing and counseling. Moreover, we emphasize the significance of correct and consistent condom use as a crucial aspect of preventive care, supporting the National Development Strategy’s goal of ensuring equitable access to services for all.
