Bedbugs (Tsikidzi) still confined to Mbare: Harare City

By Staff Reporter

Contrary to widespread reports that bed bugs (tsikidzi) have spread to other suburbs such as Mabvuku, Glen View, and Budiriro, Harare City says the infestation remains locked-in in Mbare.

Providing an update, the local authority said it has deployed a team to verify social media claims about the bugs spreading to other areas.

Harare City also noted that it has activated an Incident Management System to coordinate an effective response.

“Following the recent bed bug infestation at Mbare Flats, the City Council has activated its Incident Management System to effectively respond to the situation.

“This includes appointing a team to lead the fight against the bed bugs.

“So far, the infestation is confined to Mbare, although our teams have been dispatched to assess other areas reported on social media,” said Harare City in a statement.
Added Harare City, “An Incident Manager has been appointed and an Incident Action Plan developed. The Operations Section is being led by the Environmental Health Manager Mr Manyara. Any partners, private sector or individuals who would like to offer their support in fighting this outbreak can get in touch with the Incident Liason Officer Dr Vere on 0772288097. If there are any other surburbs also experiencing bed bug infestations we encourage them to report to the following: Director of health Services, Dr Dr Chonzi on 0712860777 or Director of Housing and Community Services, Mr Nhekairo on 0712837424 or Dr M. Vere on 0772288097 or Mr Manyara on 0772429162.”

Harare City reported that over 60 percent of targeted rooms have been fumigated.

“Integrated Pest Management efforts in Mbare Flats include spraying and mass education of affected community members. The City Council commenced round one of a planned three-round fumigation on 7 April 2025, targeting 5,450 rooms, of which 64% have been fumigated,” said the City Fathers.

A call has been made to partners and stakeholders to liaise with the City Health Department to support the mobilisation and coordination of response resources.

The Harare City Council is currently fast-tracking the procurement of private fumigation companies to strengthen and sustain operations on the ground.

The Harare City Council also said, “To effectively control and prevent bed bug infestations, in addition to fumigation being conducted residents should adopt the following preventive measures.”

1. Maintain Cleanliness and Reduce Clutter
• Expose household items that can harbour bed bugs to the sunlight regularly for whole afternoon.
• Regularly declutter living spaces to eliminate potential hiding spots for bed bugs.
• Regularly clean/ vacuum floors, bed frames, and surrounding areas frequently, especially in cracks and crevices. Apply a recommended pesticide when there is evidence of infestation.
2. Proper Laundry Practices

• Regularly change and wash bedding to prevent bed bug infestations
3. Avoid or Treat Second-Hand Items
• Avoid second hand clothing or fumigate them before use to prevent introducing bed bugs into your living space.
4. Community Engagement and Cooperation
• Participate in fumigation efforts organized by the City of Harare and are community led.
• Collaborate fumigation teams to ensure comprehensive coverage and prevent the spread of bed bugs between units.
• Ensure all rooms are open for fumigation teams to access rooms.
