THE cholera situation obtaining in Mt Darwin is slowly getting out of hand, amidst indications that 79 cases tested positive over the past 48 hours, while three deaths have already been recorded.

Mt Darwin District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr George Mapiye said the situation was getting out of control as new cases were continually coming in from Mukaradze a gold mining community.
“79 cases have so far been reported while 3 deaths have been confirmed already. One died while on his way to the hospital while two other people died from our institution at Mt Darwin District hospital.
“As of this morning we recoded one death which brought the number of casualties to four. Cases are still going up. We are however grateful to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for moving in swiftly to manage the situation,” said Dr Mapiye.
The cholera outbreak was first reported in Mt Darwin on Sunday after several cases presented with cholera like symptoms which included Vomiting and diarrhoea.
Dr Mapiye however allayed fears of the Cholera spreading to other districts like Mazowe where the World Health Day (WAD).
“We are however yet to find out what is the route cause of the cholera, we are still doing a follow-up to ascertain as well as find a solution to the problem.”
Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy has donated cholera kits US$335 000 towards cholera management in the Mt Darwin.
A cholera treatment camp has already been set at Mt Darwin district by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
