EMF Medical Aid Society has reaffirmed its dedication to delivering accessible, innovative, and member-centric healthcare at its Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The Society unveiled a forward-thinking strategy designed to meet the evolving health needs of Zimbabweans. Against the backdrop of a turbulent economic climate in 2024, EMF showcased resilience and innovation in service delivery, with the launch of new digital tools, expanded wellness services, and plans to extend coverage to the informal sector.
One of the flagship developments of the past year was the successful introduction of Thando, an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot designed to offer 24/7 support to members. The platform allows users to inquire about their benefits, access healthcare information, and navigate claims processes in real time. This marks a major leap toward convenience and digital empowerment in healthcare. The Society also expanded its in-house dental and ultrasound services, further solidifying its commitment to the holistic healthcare journey of its members.
Speaking during the AGM, EMF Chief Executive Officer Mr. Mthulisi Ncube described the chatbot and other tech upgrades as critical steps in bringing healthcare closer to members.
Innovation must be meaningful. With Thando, members don’t need to visit an office or wait in long queues to get assistance. We listened to what they needed and responded with technology that empowers,” he said.
EMF’s hybrid billing system, another recent innovation, allows members to pay using multiple currencies and mobile platforms. This flexible approach is particularly important in Zimbabwe’s complex economic environment and has contributed to an 82 percent member satisfaction rate, according to the Society’s internal survey.
Mr. Ncube also emphasized the Society’s proactive steps in managing costs and maintaining affordability. EMF has strengthened its adjudication protocols and encouraged the use of generic prescriptions, strategies that help curb the cost of claims while safeguarding the sustainability of health plans.
“We understand the pressures our members face. Cost containment, coupled with quality, is at the heart of our model. Our aim is to ensure long-term stability without compromising care,” said Mr. Ncube.
Looking ahead, EMF is setting its sights on expanding benefit packages to include mental health services and vaccinations, a nod to the growing demand for preventative and comprehensive wellness care. The Society is also preparing to roll out flexible, low-cost health plans specifically tailored for Zimbabwe’s informal sector, which makes up a significant portion of the economy but often lacks structured health coverage.
Board Chairman Mr. Cannan Dube highlighted that this expansion is part of a broader turnaround plan grounded in sound governance, innovation, and inclusivity.
“The economic terrain in 2024 tested us, but it also clarified our priorities. As a board, we took deliberate steps to modernize EMF while staying true to our roots. Our members can expect increased transparency, efficiency, and improved value from the reforms we’ve put in place,” said Mr. Dube.
He noted that compliance with global financial reporting standards (IFRS 17) was not merely a technical requirement but a commitment to accountability and trust-building with members. “Sound governance is not abstract. It translates to better service, stable premiums, and a more responsive organization,” he said.
Founded in 1948, EMF Medical Aid Society is one of Zimbabwe’s oldest healthcare funders. Despite its deep historical roots, the Society is actively reimagining its future. The leadership team has invested in a strategic realignment anchored in five core values: integrity, customer-centricity, innovation, teamwork, and empathy. These values have shaped recent decisions and will continue to inform EMF’s path forward.
Mr. Dube pointed out that EMF’s legacy and its future are not at odds but rather complementary. “We’re combining tradition with innovation. Our new digital tools and flexible benefit structures reflect our commitment to meet modern expectations while upholding the values that have earned us trust for over seven decades,” he said.
The Chairman also addressed concerns about governance restructuring, stating that members will benefit from greater efficiency and responsiveness. “We are not just changing systems. We’re building a culture of accountability. This culture improves how fast and how well we serve members,” he added.
In terms of market outlook, both Mr. Dube and Mr. Ncube expressed confidence that EMF is well-positioned to not only sustain its current membership but also grow. Targeting the informal sector represents a strategic move to tap into a vast, underserved market. The Society plans to use mobile technology and community partnerships to reach this segment with affordable plans that do not compromise on quality.
“Our products for the informal sector will be affordable, flexible, and accessible, designed around their unique needs and realities,” Mr. Ncube said. “We want every Zimbabwean to feel that quality healthcare is within reach.”
The Society’s AGM ended on a note of optimism and renewed purpose. With its digital transformation agenda well underway, a focus on holistic wellness, and strategic governance reform, EMF Medical Aid Society is redefining what it means to be a health partner in Zimbabwe.
“We are not just a medical aid society. We are a community builder, a health innovator, and above all, a reliable partner in every member’s healthcare journey,” Mr. Dube concluded.
