Zimbabwe Red Cross Holds NCDs Awareness Schools Competition

THE Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has successfully hosted the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Arts Festival with the aim of raising awareness and teaching children on the dangers of leading sedentary lifestyles and adopting dangerous habits that could lead to a high NCDs burden in the future.

The competitions were in two phase with the provincial competitions having been held first followed by the national competitions for those who would have won the provincial competitions. There were five categories which saw pupils from various schools battling it out in public speaking, poetry, drama, quiz, and debate.
Speaking at the national competitions that were held at Red Cross High School in Harare, Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) Secretary General, Mr Elias Hwenga said, “The provincial competitions took part early this year in Midlands, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central. These saw the crowning of Thornhill High School, Chinhoyi High School and Red Cross High School as the respective overall provincial champions. The individual category winners were scattered around the schools in attendance.”
The judges were drawn from the NCD Master Trainers and facilitators. The competition 
was a one-day event  and was held under strict adherence to the COVID-19 regulations:

“As you can see, there are no spectators except for the participants and the wearing of mask must be adhered to at all times except when presenting and we are sanitization everyone on entry to the premises. The scope of these competitions is to bring together youth and educate them on NCD and raising awareness on a healthy living.
“More specifically, the objectives of this mission are to cultivate a culture of wellness and healthy living among the youth. To Raise awareness of NCD’s through Competition and interactions and to share experiences amongst the youth on NCD’s and their effects.”
