MCAZ Announces New Declaration Requirement for Directors of Pharmaceutical Companies in Zimbabwe

By Staff Reporter

In a recent circular issued by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ), Mr. Richard T. Rukwata, the Director-General, announced a new requirement for directors of pharmaceutical companies. Effective from 24th March 2025, all directors applying for new licenses or renewals must complete a declaration form disclosing any contraventions of the Medicines and Allied Substances Control Act (Chapter 15:03) or the Dangerous Drugs Act (Chapter 15:02) within the past three years.

This new requirement is part of MCAZ’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry in Zimbabwe. Mr. Rukwata emphasized the importance of this measure, stating, “To give effect to Section 72 of the Act, all directors of pharmaceutical companies must now declare any past contraventions as a condition of licensure.”

The declaration form requires directors to state whether they or their companies have contravened the relevant laws and regulations. Directors must also acknowledge that providing false information may result in the denial or revocation of their licenses. Additionally, they must commit to maintaining compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Mr. Rukwata further explained, “Directors are agents of the companies they serve, and Section 72 of the Act places joint liability on both the employer and the employees or agents for any offences committed. This declaration requirement is a crucial step in ensuring accountability and compliance within the pharmaceutical industry.”

The declaration form is available on the MCAZ website (www.mcaz.co.zw) and must be submitted with all new and renewal license applications. Directors are urged to complete the form accurately and truthfully, as any false information could lead to severe consequences, including legal action.

This new requirement underscores MCAZ’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and compliance in the pharmaceutical sector. As Mr. Rukwata concluded, “We are dedicated to ensuring that all stakeholders in the pharmaceutical industry adhere to the laws and regulations that safeguard public health and safety.”

For more information, stakeholders are encouraged to visit the MCAZ website or contact the Authority directly.
