Dr. Agnes Mahomva Enters Race for AU Commissioner Role

Harare, Zimbabwe – Dr. Agnes Mahomva, Zimbabwe’s renowned public health expert and policy strategist has officially announced her candidacy for the position of Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development at the African Union (AU).

With over three decades of experience in public health leadership, she aims to bring transformative solutions to Africa’s pressing healthcare and social challenges.

Dr. Mahomva’s campaign is anchored on the principles of strengthening health systems, ensuring universal health coverage, improving humanitarian response, promoting social inclusion, and fostering innovation. She envisions an Africa where every citizen has access to quality healthcare, social protection, and timely humanitarian support, aligning her goals with Agenda 2063, the AU’s strategic framework for the continent’s development.

Africa has made significant strides in health and social development, but critical gaps remain. My vision is to turn these challenges into opportunities through science-driven innovations, strategic partnerships, and sustainable policies, Dr. Mahomva stated.

Dr. Mahomva currently serves as Public Health Advisor to the President and Cabinet of Zimbabwe. She previously led Zimbabwe’s COVID-19 response, earning praise for her coordination efforts, which resulted in one of the highest vaccination coverages in Africa. She has also held key roles, including Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care and CEO of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Zimbabwe, where she spearheaded efforts to reduce mother-to-child HIV transmission rates.

Her leadership has earned her numerous accolades, including the Order of the Star of Zimbabwe in Silver Award from President Emmerson Mnangagwa for exceptional service during the pandemic.

Dr. Mahomva’s policy agenda focuses on five core areas which include Strengthening Health Systems, Universal Health Coverage, Humanitarian Response, Social Development & Inclusion and Innovation & Research.

Dr. Mahomva’s extensive experience in high-level policy coordination, crisis management, and global health partnerships positions her as a strong contender for the AU Commissioner role. Having worked with WHO, Global Fund, USAID, and other international organizations, she has the expertise to navigate Africa’s complex health and social challenges.

Her bid has already garnered endorsements from Zimbabwe’s leadership and international public health experts, recognizing her ability to drive impactful change.
