Two children have died while 14 others, including seven adults and four children, are battling for their lives following a suspected case of food poisoning in Mashava, Masvingo Province.
According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the victims reportedly fell ill after eating food and drinking mahewu during a traditional beer ceremony held on October 27, 2025. The deceased minors were aged three and seven.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a sad incident where two children died while 14 others, who include seven adults and four children, are critically ill after attending a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava area, Masvingo,” police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
Preliminary reports suggest that the affected families had consumed sadza and mahewu at the event before suddenly developing severe stomach pains and vomiting. The victims were rushed to Masvingo General Hospital and Mashava Clinic for treatment.
“Four children and seven adults are currently in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital, while three others are receiving treatment at Mashava Clinic,” added Commissioner Nyathi.
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning, including whether the contamination resulted from the food, drinks, or other substances consumed during the ritual gathering.
The ZRP urged members of the public to exercise caution when handling or preparing food, particularly during communal and traditional events, to avoid similar tragedies.
More details are expected to be released as investigations continue.
