Persons With HIV Experiencing 2nd Line Treatment Failure Invited For Assessment

MINISTRY of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) Permanent Secretary, Dr Jasper Chimedza has announced that all people living with HIV and experiencing treatment failure with second line Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) should visit health institutions and receive specialist assessment.

In a statment,Dr Chimedza said, “In line with the 2016 National Guidelines for use of ART for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV in Zimbabwe, all people living with HIV on ART failing 2nd line therapy must be referred for specialist assessment including genotypic testing at selected institutions namely Parirenyatwa Hospital, Sally Mugabe Hospital, Mpilo Hospital, Newlands Clinic, Mutare General Hospital and Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.

“This serves to inform facilities listed below can immediately collect the indicated numbers of HIV DR test samples, 3ml -5ml whole blood in EDTA purple top tubes. Once collected, the samples should immediately be sent to facility laboratory for separation and freezing before transportation to National Microbiology and Reference Laboratory (NMRL) in Harare for analysis,” Dr Chimedza said.

He added that there are a specific number of samples to be collected. The numbers of samples to be collected are, Mpilo Hospital -45, Parirenyatwa Hospital -45, Gweru Hospital -10,-Mutare Provincial Hospital-10,  and Chinhoyi Provincial -10. Facilities are advised to print and use the attached HIVDR form and samples to NMRL.
