South Africa Pulls Popular Infant Formula From Shelves Over Safety Concerns

By Staff Reporter

South Africa’s National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent recall of NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula 800g after a potential food safety risk was identified, raising concerns among parents and caregivers of infants.

In a media statement released on January 7, 2026, the NCC said the recall affects NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula intended for infants aged 0 to 12 months who are at risk of developing cow’s milk protein allergy. The specific product affected carries batch number 51660742F3 and was produced in June 2025.

According to the Commission, the recall follows the identification of a possible presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is considered a serious food safety concern as it can pose health risks, particularly to infants whose immune systems are still developing.

The affected product was distributed through major retailers and distributors across South Africa, and was also exported to Namibia and Eswatini, extending the scope of the recall beyond the country’s borders. The NCC noted that the infant formula has an approximate shelf life of 18 months, meaning some of the affected stock may still be in households.

Consumers who have purchased the affected NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula 800g are strongly urged to stop using the product immediately and return it to the point of purchase, where they are entitled to a full refund.

The NCC said it will continue to closely monitor the recall process and engage with the supplier to ensure full compliance with national food safety requirements. The Commission also reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer health, particularly that of vulnerable groups such as infants.

The recall was issued by the National Consumer Commission, with spokesperson Phetho Ntaba designated as the contact person for media enquiries.
