Cimas MEDLABS introduces advanced genetic testing services

By Staff Reporter

THE country’s top provider of diagnostic and medical laboratory services, Cimas Medlabs has added the advanced genetic testing service on its procedures marking a significant milestone in the provision of cutting-edge healthcare solutions in Zimbabwe.

As one of the leading medical laboratories in the country, Cimas Medlabs provides a wide range of pathology tests under its various departments. These include serology, haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and histology, immunohistochestry. Cimas Medlabs is thus able to offer wellness, screening, diagnostic and monitoring tests

The services can be accessed by any patient or client be they Cimas or non-Cimas members, as long as they have been referred by any registered medical practitioner.

Genomics is the study of an individual’s genetic makeup in relation to structure, function, including their interaction with other genes and the person’s environment.

The Cimas MEDLABS Managing Pathologist Dr Bopoto Bopoto said genetic screening offers opportunities to identify emerging variants and new pathogens. In addition, genetic enables us to ascertain one’s risk of developing certain lifestyle diseases, and certain types of cancers as well as to predict the appropriate treatment options

Currently our Molecular Genetics offers comprehensive screening for 20 Human Papilloma Viruses genotypes which are associated with cancer of the cervix, 12 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and lifestyle related genetic screening, namely MyGeneDiet for appropriate diet, PharmGen Pro for appropriate medication, FitGenPro for appropriate exercise and General Health screening, is just the beginning on their journey to inspire healthier communities, said Dr. Bopoto.

He noted that this new Healthscreening service revolutionises the way we understand, diagnose, and treat various health conditions by providing personalised insights into an individual’s genetic makeup.

“When people hear the word DNA, they tend to think “paternity”. However, DNA studies are not limited to that only. Genomics has transformed the way people perceive and approach healthcare. It delves deep into the genetic make-up of individuals, unveiling valuable insights into their predisposition and risk of developing diseases such as cancer as well as response to specific medications, exercise, diet, and overall health profile,” Bopoto said. An area that has seen rapid growth is in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of of various cancers. A significant number of cancers are now treated based on the specific genes invovled in the development of that cancer
He said genomic medicine has the power to transform healthcare.

“Genomics technology in healthcare holds great hope and promise across various medical disciplines, from oncology and cardiology to rare genetic disorders and infectious diseases,” Dr Bopoto noted.

“By analysing an individual’s genetic blueprint, healthcare professionals can identify disease risks at an early stage, optimise drug selection based on genetic markers, and develop targeted therapies for better efficacy and fewer side effects.”
He added: “This revolutionary approach not only enhances personalised patient care but also drives advancements in research and drug development.”

Dr Bopoto said the introduction of genetic testing at Cimas MEDLABS reflects their commitment as Cimas Health
Group to advancing healthcare through innovation and technology.

“Genetic testing offers a powerful tool for enabling early detection, personalised treatment plans, and proactive health management,” he explained.

“The introduction of genetic testing services at Cimas MEDLABS represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide Zimbabweans with access to the most advanced healthcare options available. By understanding our genetic profiles, we can make more informed decisions about our health and well-being.”

Dr Bopoto said the genetic testing services will include a range of tests designed to assess genetic risks for various conditions, carrier status for inherited diseases, and pharmacogenomics, which helps tailor medication to an individual’s genetic profile.
This personalised approach to healthcare according to Dr Bopoto does not only improve the effectiveness of treatments but also reduces the risk of adverse drug reactions.

“Cimas MEDLABS is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a team of highly trained professionals to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and reliability in genetic testing. The process is simple, with sample collection done through a non-invasive procedure, and results are delivered with comprehensive explanations and recommendations,” he explained.

“We believe that the availability of genetic testing at Cimas MEDLABS will empower individuals to take control of their health, make informed decisions, and work with healthcare providers to develop personalised care plans that best suit their needs.”

Dr Bopoto said Cimas MEDLABS is more than a clinical diagnostic and testing entity, as they are also involved in medical research in partnership with some major research and clinical trials in the country.
