The initiative is going to work through under the Vaya, an Econet Wireless Taxi system where bookings can be done through the Vaya mobile Application.
Speaking to HealthTimes, Mr Tapiwa Tsikai, the Technical Director said he came up with the idea after realizing the troubles of PWDs in accessing public transport.
I know the burdens that we face especially in terms of accessing public transport. Those of us who do not have access to private vehicles or those who do not have their own vehicles have a challenge when it comes to accessible mobility. I realized that there was great need for accessible transport.
“Unfortunately for now, we have not yet managed to get discounts for persons with disabilities but we are still negotiating with Econet in terms of the prices given that most of PWDs are low income earners and a Vaya is not a sustainable transport system for them for daily use,” said Mr Tsikai.
“PWDs absolutely loved this initiative because it’s the first of its kind and there are thrilled to have this on board. Most people across the country want us to come with the initiative to them. Resources permitting, we are going to branch out to all provinces so that we do not leave anyone behind.”
PWDs currently face a myriad of challenges in terms of accessing public services such as transport, water and sanitation facilities, buildings, Information amongst a hots of other issues.
Meanwhile, Mr Newit Mativi, the operator and driver f the accessible Vaya said the idea was to help PWDs in terms of getting accessible transport.
“The vehicle has a ramp and three secure belts. You don’t have to lift the person to get into the car. It is designed in such a way that you just have to the person into the car and secure them. If anyone wants to join this initiative we will support their efforts because our aim is to make sure that everyone is not left behind,” Mr Mativi said.
