Zimbabwe has been elected into the World Health Assembly’s (WHA) Executive Board, under a three year term running from 2024 up to 2026.
This was revealed by the Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora addressing the second Health development partners coordination forum meeting.
I’m excited to inform you that Zimbabwe was elected into the Executive Board of the World Health Assembly. I encourage you to engage us on any issues you feel should be discussed in the Executive Board,” said Dr Mombeshora.
He added that the World Health Assembly deliberated on a number of health topics designed to accelerate the attainment of universal health coverage and ensure global health security. The Assembly reiterated the need to urgently adopt the Pandemic Treaty.
He further stated is was an honour for Zimbabwe as it will be afforded the opportunity to participate at high level WHA meetings.
“This is a great achievement for us as we now sit amongst other executives discussing pertinent health issues at global level. So this is commendable for we are no longer in that group where we wait to hear from others as you will be among others participating on several issues,” the Health Minister said.
Representing Zimbabwe on the board is the Permanent Secretary for the Health Ministry Dr Aspect Maunganidze.
The Executive Board, according to the WHO, is composed of 34 persons who are technically qualified in the field of health. Each designated by a Member State that has been elected to serve by the World Health Assembly. Member States are elected for three-year terms.
